NEWSEM coffee stand
At NEWSEM coffee stand in Akasaka, enjoy homemade curry crafted with 26 spices, rich chicken cream rice, morning toast sets, and generously poured iced coffee. It serves comfortably as a weekday breakfast stop, lunch spot, or casual kissaten break.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
While the storefront proclaims itself a coffee stand, many walk through the door with an appetite for its hearty, full-fledged meals. A signature draw is the homemade spice curry, simmered with 26 carefully selected spices to yield a deep, robust flavor that finishes with a gentle, lingering heat. Beyond the standard plate, a wide array of toppings—such as egg, cheese, corn, broccoli, and natto—allows diners to customize their bowl with each visit. Rivaling the aromatic curry in popularity is the handmade chicken cream rice, prepared with milk and cream, making it a soothing, velvety alternative when craving milder comfort food.
The coffee served alongside the meals holds its own, particularly the iced coffee delivered in a glass poured right to the brim. Opening at 8:00 on weekday mornings, the shop regularly draws patrons stopping by for classic morning sets featuring thick toast, salad, and a boiled egg. For an afternoon break, the cafe selection spans cinnamon toast, pizza toast, and old-fashioned custard pudding, joined by more unconventional drinks like a spiced banana shake and spiced chai.
Inside, counter seating and small tables set an unpretentious tone where solo visitors can relax without hesitation. Retaining the nostalgic atmosphere of a traditional Japanese kissaten, the space permits smoking, offering a welcoming retreat for smokers; those who prefer to avoid smoke can opt for the takeout curry bento instead.
